Former Resident Visa (Subclass 151) This visa allows former Australian permanent residents and individuals who served in the Australian Armed Forces (before 1981) to re-settle in Australia. You are eligible to apply for this visa status if either: - You spent 9 of your first 18 years in Australia as a permanent resident
or - You completed at least 3 months service in the Australian Armed Forces (at any time) prior to 19 January 1981
Your spouse and/or dependent family members can be included in your application, as long as they meet certain requirements. This visa will allow you and your dependent family members to reside in Australia as permanent residents. You can also: - work and study in Australia
- receive subsidised healthcare through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
- access certain social security payments (after a qualifying waiting period)
- be eligible for Australian citizenship (subject to meeting the residency eligibility criteria)
- sponsor people for permanent residence (subject to waiting periods).
If you are applying as a Long Residence applicant, the following must apply: - you spent 9 out of your first 18 years in Australia as an Australian permanent resident
- be under 45 years of age at the time of application
- you have never become an Australian citizen
- you have maintained close ties (whether business, cultural or personal) with Australia
If you are an applicant who has served time in the Australian Armed Forces, you must meet one of the following: - have completed at least 3 months continuous service in the Australian Armed Forces
or - have been discharged before completing 3 months service on the basis that you became medically unfit because of that service
