Worker Registration Scheme

Effective from 1 May 2004, nationals moving to the UK from the following countries (known as the A8) will need to register for the Worker Registration Scheme (WRS):

• Czech Republic
• Estonia
• Hungary
• Latvia
• Lithuania
• Poland
• Slovakia
• Slovenia

Requirements

If you are a citizen from one of the A8 countries, you should apply to register for the WRS as soon as you start a new job in the UK. If you do not apply within 1 month of starting your job, your employment will be illegal and you may have to stop working. Employers who hire non-registered workers are breaking the law and could be subject to a fine of up to £5,000.

You do not need to register for the WRS if:

• You are self-employed
• You have been working legally in the UK for 12 months or more in the job you held on 1 May 2004
• You were issued with leave to enter the UK before 1 May 2004 as a seasonal agricultural worker and took up employment on the seasonal agricultural workers scheme on or after 1 May
• You are providing services in the UK on behalf of any employer who is not established in the UK
• You are also a citizen of the UK, another European Economic Area (EEA) state (other than one of the A8 member states) or Switzerland
• You are the family member of a Swiss or EEA national (other than one of the A8 states) who is working in the UK
• You are the family member of a Swiss or EEA national who is living in the UK as a student, a retired or self sufficient person

Once you have worked for 12 months on the WRS, you will be eligible to apply for the EEA registration certificate.
