European Citizens
For the purposes of immigration, the European Economic Area (EEA) is divided into 3 sections. Nationals of the 1st section may live, work and travel in the UK without restriction. However, if you are a national of one of these countries and you wish to live and work in the UK for an extended period, you may find it useful to obtain a registration certificate, as it can often make subsequent applications, for example for naturalisation, considerably easier. The first section of the EEA comprises the following countries (not including the UK itself):
| Austria |
Germany |
Malta |
| Belgium |
Greece |
Netherlands |
| Cyprus |
Republic of Ireland |
Norway |
| Denmark |
Italy |
Portugal |
| Finland |
Luxembourg |
Spain |
| France |
|
Sweden |
Nationals of countries in the 2nd section, referred to as the A8 (that is to say, the group of countries that acceded to the EU in 2004), must apply for registration under the workers registration scheme (WRS). Please see the workers registration scheme section of this site for more detail. The A8 comprises:
| Czech Republic |
Lithuania |
| Estonia |
Poland |
| Hungary |
Slovakia |
| Latvia |
Slovenia |
If you are a national of the 3rd section, comprising Romania and Bulgaria, you must acquire an accession worker card if you wish to work in the UK, unless you fall under one of the exempt categories.
