Studying in South Africa is an increasingly popular option for undergraduates across the world; South Africa offers a long history of excellence in learning with a host of educational establishments. Immigration to South Africa has grown significantly in recent years due in part to a comparatively liberal immigration policy coupled with the high quality of life which can be obtained in the country.

A Study visa allows the holders to live and work (in a restricted manner) in South Africa for as long as they need to complete their course in order to help support themselves and any dependents.

Visa Eligibility

The following criteria must be met.

  • A letter of acceptance must be provided demonstrating that an applicant has been offered a place on a full time course of study at a recognised educational institution
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate evidence of enough funds to support themselves in the country
  • It must be shown that the course fees have been paid in full
  • Private medical insurance must be arranged and documentary evidence of this must be provided
  • It must be the candidate's demonstrable intention to return to their own country at the end of their period of study

Study Permits are issued to two types of Immigrants:

1. Stand-alone immigrants who wish to undertake studies in South Africa

Applications for study permits need to be submitted with various supporting documentation such as medical insurance, acceptance by the school/college of proof of the student (or student's sponsor) to support themselves throughout the study period.

Study Permits are issued if the appliocant accepts an official letter from the relevant institution confirming provisional acceptance and the duration of the course. The student may work up to 20 hours per week during the semester or when the workplace is a learning institution.

2. Students accompanying their families in immigration to South Africa

This may arise, for example, where a parent has taken up employment in South Africa and has already obtained the relevant work permit.

A stusy permit must still be applied for and issued to allow the student to attend a learning institution, and this is achieved by supplying the appropriate application and supporting documentation.

Please note: Study Permits do NOT qualify for permanent residence.

STUDY PERMITS: VALIDITY PERIOD

Study Permits in South Africa are normally issued for the duration of the course.
