Work Visas
General Work Permit
According to the South African Immigration Act, the visa applicant for a General Work Permit has to provide a conditional offer of employment from a South African-based employer, as well as documentation confirming that the employer has fully endeavored to employ South African citizens or residents. Employees who are still in the process of sourcing employment have to revert to the option of applying for a Quota Work Permit.
The application needs to include a confirmation that the foreigner possesses the necessary qualifications, as certified by the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) and confirmation of the relevant work experience.
Furthermore an original advertisement for the vacant position from the national printed media should be attached to the application. This advertisement must meet certain requirements stipulated by the Act. You are most welcome to contact us for further information in this respect.

Shortage Occupation Work Permits (Quotas)
Visa applicants who fall within certain professional categories in which skills are considered scarce may apply for a Quota Work Permit. Foreigners who are qualified to apply within these categories do not need to provide proof of an offer of employment. Such candidates are generally attractive for South African employers as they do not have to advertise the position.
The visa application needs to include a confirmation that the foreigner possesses the necessary qualifications, as certified by the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA), and confirmation that the applicant has at least five years of relevant work experience. The quota system allows for a certain number of work permits in the following broad occupational categories:
- 30,000 professionals in the category science and engineering
- 1,000 professionals in the category education
- 4,000 professionals in the category information industry
- 5,000 professionals in the category health and medical science
- 8,000 professionals in the category agricultural science
- 1,500 professionals in the category management and commerce
Kindly submit your curriculum vitae for an assessment if you qualify for a Quota Work Permit.
Within 90 days of entering the country on a Quota Work Permit the holder must submit a confirmation of having secured employment within the specific category.

Work Permits on the Grounds of Exceptional Skills
The South African Immigration Act currently makes it possible for foreigners with exceptional skills to apply for a temporary work permit under this category.
The application must be accompanied by a letter from a South African or foreign organ of state, or from an established South African academic, cultural or business body, confirming the exceptional skills or qualifications of the visa applicant. Furthermore, any proof which substantiates the extraordinary qualifications, such as testimonials from former employers, publications or dissertations should accompany the application.
