Retirement Visas
The temporary residence permit for retirees is granted for up to 48 months, and may be renewed on expiry.
The main criteria is financial; it is necessary to prove that you have sufficient income or capital to support yourself and your family.
You must be able to prove that you have an income of ZAR 20,000 per person per month (excluding minors) which can consist of the combination (or one of) the following:
- A pension from your country of origin
- The rental value of any property owned (including the house you are living in)
- Cash savings
The figure for equivalent income is arrived at by dividing the amount of capital you have by the period of time for which you require a permit. You may apply for a permit for a maximum of 48 months.
It is worth noting that temporary retirement permits can also be endorsed so as to allow you to work if you later secure a job.
Permanent residence may be applied for if sufficient proof has been given that the applicant receives an income of ZAR 20,000 per month from either:
- A lifelong guaranteed pension from your country of origin
- Rental income of any property owned (including the house you are living in)
