Australian Skilled Migration

General Skilled Migration (GSM) is often the favoured route of entry into Australia. It is not the only option for skilled workers but it is the most desirable due to the independence and opportunity for permanent residence.

There are now 4 classes of visas within GSM and all applicants must nominate an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) of Australia, and meet the basic requirements at the time of application. For more details and to take an online assessment please click on the following:

Skilled Independent Visa – subclass 175

To qualify for this visa, an applicant must meet the basic requirements and score a minimum of 120 points on the points test. Most commonly these applicants will be working in occupations that appear on the Migrations Occupations in Demand List (MODL).

This is the most desirable of all skilled visas. It allows the successful applicant, independent of a sponsor,  to gain permanent residency in Australia, and places no restriction on the region of residence or the nature of the work the applicant can undertake.

For those that don’t meet the 120 points, there are other options.

Skilled Regional Sponsored – subclass 475 (Designated Area Family Sponsored Visa)

To qualify for this visa, an applicant must meet the basic requirements, score at least 75 points in the points test, and must be sponsored by a family member who is an Australian Citizen or permanent resident living in a designated area of Australia.

The successful applicant and all included dependents will be granted provisional residence for 3 years upon first entry to Australia and will be required to demonstrate that they have met the residence and work requirements as stipulated by the visa conditions in order to apply for Australian Permanent Residence.

This visa type is intended for those people who want to live and work in Australia but who do not meet the requirements of the subclass 175 or 176.

The regional sponsored visa was designed to reduce the requirements for those people who are willing to migrate to a regional or low growth area of Australia. This was done with the knowledge that these areas are not often as popular with new migrants and with the intention of further populating these areas. But do not be misled; not all these areas are in the “outback”. Some of these areas contain large cities and towns, even though they may be set in a typical rural landscape.
